Fascinated by Grandpa's bright red stapler, Derek sneaks it out of the house and takes it to school. Without Derek's knowing it, the stapler drops through a hole in his pocket. Now Derek must struggle with how to break the news to Grandpa. Readers are encouraged to predict what Derek and Grandpa will say to each other about what has happened.

Emily's grandparents, visiting from Japan, come to Mrs. Hall's class to talk to the King School Kids about their country's customs, clothing, and toys. Their presentation excites the children and inspires them to express their appreciation in an especially fitting manner: they bow as they say goodbye.

Kendra is distressed about being the tallest kid in her class. Mom and little sister Layla have fun helping her see why it's good to be tall. As Kendra takes down jars of peanut butter and jelly from high up in a kitchen cabinet, she has to admit that being tall has its advantages.

Victor is upset with himself because he has trouble doing an art project at school. Later, at home, his loving family helps him feel much better about himself by proudly listing the many things he does really well.
